Niza
Nederlands Instituut voor Zuidelijk Afrika (Niza, Dutch Institute for Southern Africa)
General Information
Niza is a Dutch NGO principally engaged in campaigning and advocacy to bring about more equitable and sustainable approaches to natural resources in Sub-Saharan Africa, for the benefit of its people. To achieve this, we work closely with African partners to help amplify their voices. We link their needs, stories and campaigning or advocacy opportunities to public awareness, campaigning and decision-making processes in the Netherlands and beyond.
Contributions to IANRA
Niza has a long history of cooperation with partners in Southern Africa around natural resource extraction and has long supported efforts to improve the benefits natural resources can bring to people, especially the most excluded, in this region. Over the past 5 years, Niza has also become increasingly involved in campaigning, lobby, advocacy on natural resources within the Netherlands (and Europe more broadly) and plans to become even more active in economic justice activities of this sort in the future. The reason for this added element is that it has become evermore apparent to Niza and others that attitudes, policies and approaches to natural resource use in Sub-Saharan Africa must be addressed both in Africa itself (by supporting African initiatives to claim a stronger voice in natural resource use decisions) and in the wealthy countries whose development aid and economic policies, corporations and public consumer choices impact natural resource use in Africa. In this light, the IANRA network represents a centrepiece of Niza's current and future engagement with Africa and Europe.
